Jesus laughs. "It's not a bad thing! Except for the part where you'll attack people for him. Do you like him back?"

Aaron shakes his head. "He's a friend," he argues. "I ain't gay."

"Okay. It's okay if you do like him, though. It doesn't necessarily make you gay." And he's pretty sure Aaron's flirted right back.

"Yeah, so what are you getting at? We just - we just talk about stuff. And read together."

He swallows and his jaw clenches slightly, his tell for lying.

"It doesn't matter since we can't talk anyway."

"You'll get your communicator back." But he's studying Aaron. "But not if you keep lying. Why'd you lie just now?"

"Because it's none of your goddamn business," he argues.

[hippie_ninja]

"So say that." He takes no offense to it. "Lying is still against the rules."

"Then that's my answer. It's none of your business what we do."

He threads his fingers through his hair.

"Why does it matter to you?"

"Because I care about you," he says simply. "So I care who you're close to. I care why you do things. I care about what makes you happy."

"Yeah, if you cared, you'd let me talk to him," he sighs. "He's my best fucking friend here, Jesus. Brooklyn left, and if he leaves and I don't get to talk to him before that, then I will set fire to Maggie's goddamn cabin the next time you drag me there. She may not die, but she'll suffer. I'm real good at making people suffer, man."

He looks away, not even realizing there are actual tears in his eyes until they sting and he presses a fist into his face to get rid of them.
